This is a biography about Zhou Dian 周顛 (Crazy Zhou), written by Zhu Yuanzhang 朱元璋(1328-1398), the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The text is from the sixth volume of the Jilu huibian 紀錄彙編 edited by Shen Jiefu 沈節甫, a rich collection of historical texts of the Ming Dynasty, of which the first nine volumes are the articles and poems of the emperors, published in 1617 by Chen Yuting 陳于廷 (1566-1635).
Zhou Dian, who lived in the late Yuan (1271-1368) and early Ming Dynasty, whose name is unknown, was called Dian Xian 顛仙 (Crazy immortal) because of his magical spells, but his behaviour was crazy and weird. Zhou Dian showed his abilities to Zhu Yuanzhang, passed the fire and other tests, won his trust, and then helped him attack the Yuan army. Later, Zhu Yuanzhang considered some of his words inauspicious, throwing Zhou into the river. But Zhou Dian was not hurt and left Zhu. During the Hongwu 洪武 period (1368-1398), Zhu Yuanzhang, who had already become an emperor, was seriously ill, and Zhou Dian sent him a barefoot monk 赤腳僧 to deliver medicine. Zhou Dian's biography can also be found in the "Fangjizhuan" 方技傳 (Biographies of Craftsmen and Technicians) in the Mingshi 明史.
