A man named Liu Jinda 劉錦達 becomes engaged to the daughter of Prime Minister Gu Wenxue 顧文學. Gu is falsely accused and rescued by Liu's father. However, Liu's father dies and Gu wants to break off the engagement. Eventually, Liu wins first place in the imperial examination and marries Gu's daughter. The story is set duing the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
