Editorial History

The included preface attributed to Qiu Jun 邱濬 and the postscript attributed to Wan Ao 王鏊 were probably fabricated by the anonymous editor or produced by spirit-writing. The earliest extant edition is a reprint in 1738, which was based on the edition no later than 1706. In the Qing dynasty, the text was both published independently and included in anthologies or collections. The textual transmission lineage of the current edition as known so far is listed below: Xiao jing xin zhu 孝經新註 → the verison included in Wen di quan shu 文帝全書 → the version included in Wen di shu chao 文帝書鈔 → the version included in Dao zang ji yao 道藏輯要 → the version included in Chong kan dao zang ji yao 重刊道藏輯要.
