A story about three men, Su Zhongliang 蘇忠良, Chen Tingyu 陳廷玉 and Ying Tingyu 應庭玉. Chen Tingyu is a poor man and decides to seek help from his relatives, leaving his wife Liu 劉 at home. Chen doesn't get any money from his relatives, and he plans to commit suicide. Ying Tingyu sees this and stops him. Chen's wife, Liu, is starving at home and also wants to commit suicide. Su Zhongliang comes by and sends her some money. When Chen Tingyu comes back and sees the money, he suspects that his wife is having an affair. So he divorces her. Liu is beaten by her father, who is ashamed of his daughter, and Liu is almost dies. She is then thrown out of the house and goes to live in a nunnery. Chen Tingyu and Su Zhongliang meet while taking the imperial examination. Chen talks about the story of his wife, and Su tells him the truth. Chen is remorseful and begs his wife's forgiveness. Finally, She forgives him. Ying Tingyu, however, has a different story. He loses a clothes with plum blossom patterns and is picked up by a girl named Gao Xiujin 高秀金. Ying is also poor, and he picks up a pearl in a temple and is accused of stealing it. Chen Tingyu and Su Zhongliang rescue Ying after they pass the imperial examination. Ying also passes the next one and marries Gao Xiujin.
