A man called Wang Yu 王御 whose family is in decline. He is so poor that he asks his father-in-law for help. His father-in-law refuses to help and wants to break off the engagement unless he has enough money for the wedding. His mother-in-law and fiancée decide to help him. They give Wang some money to propose marriage. The money is stolen by Wang's friend Wang Tong 汪桐, who is in favour of Wang Yu's fiancée. Knowing that the money is lost, the fiancee decides to stay in a nunnery, hoping that Wang Yu will be able to pass the Imperial Examination and then marry her. But Wang fails the exam. He is so ashamed that he commits suicide in the shrine of the god Kuixing 魁星. The god secretly saves him. An official called Li Dongyang hears Wang's cries and decides to help him. Eventually, Wang passes the exam with the highest score and marries his fiancée.
