This edition is incomplete. It only contains the first volume. The story is set during the reign of Zhengde 正德 Emperor (r.1505-1521). A family Tang 唐 is given a robe by the emperor. The seventh son Tang Qing 唐卿 goes to the capital to take the imperial examination. He meets a man called Diao Nanlou 刁南樓 and they become good friends. Diao invites Tang to travel to Weiyang 維揚 with him, and Tang agrees. Diao's wife Liu Su'e 劉素娥, while her husband leaves home, fornicates with another man named Wang Wen 王文. This book ends here.
