註疏 Commentary
[Zhang Wanrong] Xizi 惜字 (cherishing written characters) is an important theme in the morality books in Qing dynasty, which is generally based on the belief in Wenchang 文昌帝君, but this text focuses on the belief in Cangjie 倉頡. Cangjie is a legendary figure in ancient China, claimed to be an official historian of the Yellow Emperor and the inventor of Chinese characters.
This book may help us to learn about the religious beliefs about Cangjie, some of the texts were created in the Cangjie Temple in Damingfu, Zhili 直隸大名府 (in present-day Handan, Hebei Province), and later published in Beijing. The book also contains the 文昌帝君惜字功罪律.
