A girl called Zhang Yuying 張玉英 believes in Buddhism and refuses to get married. Her mother is so angry with her that she strangles her. After her death, Yuying travels through the netherworld and becomes a disciple of the goddess Lishan Laomu 黎山老母. Lishan Laomu tells Yuying about her past and present life and lets her marry a Zhuangyuan 狀元 (the one who achieved the highest score of the Imperial examination),to fulfil her karma.
