There are many versions of 目連救母, but the most widely circulated version in China is a Shakyamuni Buddha’s first disciple , Mulian (Sanskrit: Maudgalyayana; Pali: Moggallāna), arrived the realm of the hungry ghosts with his supernatual power, saw his mother suffering from hunger and eventually freed her through his power.The story evolved and appeared in numerous shapes and permutations. Texts from the Tang dynasty found at Dunhuang敦煌, Gansu甘肅, at the beginning of the twentieth century showed rich stories in the form of chuanqi傳奇 or bianwen變文
