There are many versions of Mulian jiumu 目連救母, but the most widely circulated version in China is that telling the story of Shakyamuni Buddha’s first disciple, Mulian (Sanskrit: Maudgalyayana; Pali: Moggallāna), who arrived in the realm of the hungry ghosts with his supernatual power, saw his mother suffering from hunger and eventually freed her through his power. The story evolved and appeared in numerous shapes and permutations. Texts from the Tang dynasty found at Dunhuang 敦煌, Gansu 甘肅, at the beginning of the twentieth century showed rich stories in the form of chuanqi 傳奇 or bianwen 變文.
