A man called Chen Shan 陳善 sells fish for a living. He makes a friend called Zhang Chao 張超. One day, Chen Shan meets the god Taibaijinxing 太白金星, who gives him an elixir and tells him to practise. The god also changes Chen's name to Aunao 懊惱. With the elixir, Chen Shan can bring dead fish back to life and make a lot of money. However, his wife, Qian 錢, cheats on him and he catches the affair. He is disappointed and leaves home to practice. Chen Shan has a sister-in-law surnamed Zhou 周, who also catches the affair. Worried that Zhou will spread the word, Qian sues Zhou for murdering her husband. Zhang Chao, who was already an official, rescues Zhou. Eventually, Zhou and Zhang Chao are also practising. The story is set during the reign of Emperor Jiajing 嘉靖 of the Ming (r.1521-1567).
