A man called Zhao Yunqing 趙雲卿 is engaged to a girl Miss Bai 白. Yunqing goes to his fiancée's family to get married, and on the way, he meets another man called Li Wenlin 李文林. Knowing that Yunqing is going to get married, Li decides to kill and replace him. He pushes Yunqing into the fire and goes to the girl's family. But the girl's father, Bai Longjiang 白龍江, doesn't want his daughter to marry Yunqing, so he poisons the false Yunqing. His daughter, Miss Bai, is very sad because she thinks her fiancé is dead. She also wants to commit suicide and is saved by her friend Li Cuiying (李翠英), a clever girl. Cuiying meets the real Yunqing and learns the truth. She tells Miss Gao and they run away from home with Yunqing. On the way, they meet some bandits. Yunqing and the two girls are separated. Miss Gao and Li Cui get rid of the bandits and return home. Eventually, they are reunited with Yunqing. Yunqing passes the imperial examination and marries the two girls.
