A man called Su Wenshang 蘇文尚 has two children, Su Jingling 蘇景龍 and Su Fengying 蘇鳳英. After the death of his wife, Su Wenshang remarries another woman, Wu 吳. Then Su Wenshang leaves the house for the Imperial examination. His wife Wu treats her stepchildren badly. Wu has a son called Zhang Bao 張保. Zhang comes to see his mother, and they plan to poison the children. However, Zhang Bao himself is poisoned when he accidentally eats the poisoned food. The god Taibaijinxing 太白金星 saves him. Su Jinglong runs away and his sister still stays at home. Su Wenshang makes a friend called Yu Hong 余洪 when he leaves home and takes Yu Hong's third son, called Yu Chang 余昌, as his stepson. Yu Chang goes to Su Wenshang's house and learns that Wenshang's daughter is still being abused by her stepmother. Knowing this, Wenshang comes home to find his daughter working hard. There is a cup of tea by her side. Wenshang drinks the tea and dies. Again Taibaijinxing comes and saves him. Finally, woman Wu is punished.
