A fisherman called Hu Yan 胡晏 sells fish and meets a tyrant called Lu Shikuan 盧士寬. Shikuan beats Hu hard. Seeing this, another man, Tian Yuchuan 田玉川, comes to help Hu and beats Lu as well. After returning home, Hu Yan dies, leaving a daughter named Hu Fenglian 胡鳳蓮. Lu Shikuan also dies, and his father, Lu Lin 盧林, wants revenge. Knowing that Tian Yuchuan helped her father, Hu Fenglian intends to marry him, and Tian gives her two butterfly-decorated cups as a token. Lu Lin tries to put Tian in prison, but he escapes. Meanwhile, the Miao 苗 tribe rebels and Lu Lin is ordered to suppress the rebellion. Tian Yuchuan changes his name to Lei Jinzhou 雷金州 and joins the army. He defeats the Miao and saves Lu Lin from death during the battle. Lu wants to marry his daughter, Lu Fengying 盧鳳英, to him. After the wedding, Tian tells Fengying about his true identity. Fengying knows that he is the one who killed her brother, and she knows that her father will kill her husband in revenge. She goes home and cries, and her father decides to forgive Tian. In the end, Tian is not killed, and he marries both Fengying and Fenglian. This story is set during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
