註疏 Commentary

[Aaron Reich]: As discussed in a 2019 study by Xu Wei 許蔚 of Fudan University, this handwritten liturgical manual appears in a 1931 exhibition catalogue of the National Beiping Library (Guoli Beiping tushuguan 國立北平圖書館), which lists the manual and 20 other Daoist ritual texts as “manuscripts from the Ming Chenghua period [1464–1487 CE].” In terms of its contents, the manual presents several sets of instructions for liturgical methods belonging to the broad category of Thunder ritual, which scholars surmise became part of Daoist liturgical systems “from the twelfth century onward” (Skar, EOT, p. 627). The methods in this manual have as their primary purpose the modification of weather patterns; this usually manifests as formal prayers for precipitation, though on occasion the methods offer instructions to pray for clear skies. Each method provides detailed procedures for writing what I have elsewhere described as “iconographic talismans,” that is, talismans that bear visual resemblance to the deities whom they embody (Reich 2018, Chapter 4). In Xu Wei’s assessment, this manual shares characteristics with canonical texts attributed to the eminent Shenxiao 神霄 master Mo Yueding 莫月鼎 (1226–1294).
