A man named Su 蘇芳 has a daughter named Xu Jinfeng 許金鳳 with his ex-wife, who has died. He remarries Xu 許, who gives birth to another daughter, Xu Yinfeng 許銀鳳. Xu Fang decides to practice in a temple, leaving his wife and two daughters at home. Xu doesn't like her stepdaughter Jinfeng. Jinfeng is engaged to a man named Wu Shuangde 吳雙德. However, Xu wants to break off the engagement and marry Jinfeng to her nephew Xu Tinggui 許廷貴. Jinfeng runs away from home with her maid Yulan 玉蘭. They live in a nunnery. Tinggui goes to the nunnery and is killed by Jinfeng. Jinfeng is thus sent to prison. Eventually, Shuangde passes the Imperial Examination and rescues Jinfeng and marries Jinfeng, Yinfeng and Yulan. This story is set during the Han dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD; 25–220 AD).
