Mount Tai 泰山, located in Tai'an City, Shandong Province 山东省泰安市, is the head of the Five sacred mountains 五嶽 (Mount Tai in the east 東岳泰山, Mount Hua in the west 西嶽華山, Mount Heng in the south 南嶽衡山, Mount Heng in the north 北嶽恆山, and Mount Hua in the middle 中嶽華山), and one of the most important sacred mountains in ancient China.
Taishan jishi 泰山紀事 was compiled by Song Dao 宋燾 (1572-1614), a former high-ranking official who later resigned to live lived in seclusion and teach in his hometown of Tai'an, and compiled this book in 1612. It is divided into three fascicles (juan): Heaven, Earth, and Man 天 地 人, and the third fascicle is printed in a different style from the first two. The Heaven fascicle is a collection of forty-three biographies of important local officials, hermits, and women (only twenty-nine are preserved in the version of Sandong shiyi). The Earth Collection is a collection of articles about monuments and customs, as well as the emperor's rituals. The People Collection is the legends of spirits and ghosts.
